Matthieu Lavanchy

Matthieu Lavanchy sponge sculptures are made of normal industrial produced sponge pinned and pinched in specific areas to create a bodily and even figurative form. In using such a mundane object to suggest bodily forms he transforms the language developed by artists like Michelangelo’s creations of traditional precious marble sculptures of the figurative body and reinvents it for a contemporary audience suggesting bodily curves within the sponges. Lavanchy creates a reflection of the beauty of the body within an object used to cleanse and wash the body clean maybe these pieces are a reflection of the person using the sponge. Overall I feel with minimal suggestion Lavanchy creates true reflections of the visual human body in various forms.
