In using the personal space of a bed we can see the narrative of the artists life. This bed was a revolutionary movement within British art. The bed creates a detailed portrait of events of the artist like paint or sculpture couldn’t. The bed is somewhere we go to find comfort and hide away from the world. Emin’s bed portrays the artists struggle with a mental breakdown as well as her sex encounters and smoking and drinking habits. Within the gallery space the bed looks surreal as it was never meant for the gallery, however in doing so Emin invites the viewers to peer upon the personal and intimate things about herself in the bed.
